In 1960, Eugene Ybarra began producing corn tortillas for restaurants in the Baytown, TX. area. The operation consisted of five employees making approximately 200 dozen tortillas per hour. He continued this trend as a supplier for the next 20 plus years. In 1989, El Matador Foods was established and began selling products at the retail level that consisted of corn and flour tortillas, as well as fried tortilla chips for snacks. In 1991, these products were being distributed by our first large costumer, Grocers Supply, throughout Texas. By the end of 1997, El Matador Foods products were being distributed by SYSCO Food Services in Texas, New Mexico and Southern Colorado. Today, El Matador Foods, Inc. manufactures a full line of corn and flour tortillas including wheat tortillas, flavored wraps, Indian ethic flatbreads, low carb, taco shells, fried chips, and our tex-mex salsa. Utilizing only the finest ingredients, selected to produce consistent high quality products, and having the ability to produce different sizes and weights needed to fit the customer´s needs, and working to improve customer service and product quality for both foodservice and retail customers in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and the New Mexico market.

El Matador Foods is a member of the Tortilla Industry Association, Go Texan, The American Institute of Baking International, and has recently obtained a Minority Business Entrepreneur Certification with the City of Houston as well as being HUB Certified within the State of Texas.

With the Quality Control programs, our facility is able to evaluate everything from employee training to documentation of ingredients. Complying with AIB´s Comprehensive Programs of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP´s) and keeping a complete, updated Hazardous Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) program in place.
